DAY 1 Meet and greet at Zanzibar International Airport with courtesy transfer to Stonetown hotel.
DAY 2 Breakfast. Walking tour of this ancient Swahili town including the former Sultan's palace, the House of Wonders which is now the National Museum ( excellent displays ), the old Portuguese Fort as well as the Anglican cathedral which now occupies the site of the infamous slave market, shut down by the British in 1873. We also make a visit to the Anglican-run St.Monica's school to get a first-hand look at primary education on the island. Tour guests are invited to make a contribution to the education of the children. Lunch at local restaurant. Rest of afternoon free. Dinner at local restaurant.
DAY 3 Breakfast Visit to the island's music school, located on the Stonetown waterfront. Lunch at local restaurant. Afternoon free.
Dinner at local restaurant. After dinner, we are in for a treat with a private concert at the Zanzibar Culture Club by the famous taarab orchestra of Zanzibar.
DAY 4 Breakfast Visit to local spice farm or " shamba " where they grow the indigenous nutmeg, vanilla, cardamom and cloves, etc.
Fascinating - ending with a spicy lunch on the plantation. Opportunity to buy spices direct. Rest of afternoon free. Dinner on own tonight.
DAY 5 Breakfast Day trip to culture village out on east coast. A Swahili fishing village, where we are introduced to local people including a traditional Swahili healer. Wonderful. Lunch on beach included. Rest of afternoon free. Last night in Stonetown - dinner at local restaurant.
DAY 6 Breakfast Checkout and morning transfer out to beach resort on east coast. You have choice of two beach hotels for your 2 nights at the beach.
DAY 7 At beach.
DAY 8 Breakfast Checkout and early morning transfer to Zanzibar International Airport. End of Services.
Beach Option 1: Stay at the luxurious Sultan Sands which has its own PADI dive centre, traditional Swahili spa, etc. Half-board: breakfast and dinner are included here. Beach Option 2: Stay at the modest, but very decent, Paje Dhow Inn on Paje beach. Full breakfast included and they even have a small pool for guests.
